The routine: teach it the noise, then subtract it

Audacity's Noise Reduction works from a sample — it learns what your specific hum sounds like, then subtracts that fingerprint from the whole recording. The steps:

Find 2–5 seconds of noise alone — the pause before you started talking. Select just that.
Open Effect → Noise Removal and Repair → Noise Reduction and click Get Noise Profile. The window closes; Audacity has memorized your room.
Select the whole recording (Ctrl/Cmd-A), reopen the same effect, and apply.
Start gentle: reduction around 10–12 dB, sensitivity 6, frequency smoothing 3 — then preview. Push the dB up only if noise still shows through.

The honest limits

It needs consistency. The profile method shines on steady noise — fans, hiss, hum — and struggles with unpredictable sound: traffic, voices, a café. For those, the AI rebuilders win; see the online free options.
