The routine: teach it the noise, then subtract it

Audacity's Noise Reduction works from a sample — it learns what your specific hum sounds like, then subtracts that fingerprint from the whole recording. The steps:

  1. Find 2–5 seconds of noise alone — the pause before you started talking. Select just that.
  2. Open Effect → Noise Removal and Repair → Noise Reduction and click Get Noise Profile. The window closes; Audacity has memorized your room.
  3. Select the whole recording (Ctrl/Cmd-A), reopen the same effect, and apply.
  4. Start gentle: reduction around 10–12 dB, sensitivity 6, frequency smoothing 3 — then preview. Push the dB up only if noise still shows through.

The honest limits

Cap hit? Swap trickWeird artifacts after a heavy pass? Undo, halve the dB, and run the effect twice gently instead — two light passes beat one brutal one.

Fair questions

Is Audacity really completely free?
Completely: open source, no tiers, no meter, no account, no upsell waiting at minute 61. It's the only tool on our shelf with nothing to disclose.
Why doesn't everyone just use Audacity then?
Because it charges patience instead of money: it's a manual editor with a learning curve, its noise reduction needs a noise-only sample to work from, and aggressive settings leave watery artifacts on voices. The AI uploaders are one-click; this is ten.
Can Audacity remove noise from a live call?
No — it edits recordings. For live calls, see the free suppression tools; for one-click file cleanup, Adobe Enhance's free hour.
